Farmers Won’t Accept Producer Price Below GH¢6,000-Kennedy Osei Nyarko To Gov’t

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the MP for Akim Swedru, has made a strong appeal. He urged President John Dramani Mahama to raise the cocoa producer price. He wants it set at no less than GH¢6,000 per tonne. Nyarko warned that farmers will not accept anything lower.

In a passionate Facebook post on June 1, 2025, he emphasized the need for action. The government must keep its campaign promises to cocoa farmers. This is especially important due to rising global cocoa prices.

“Mr. President, our gallant cocoa farmers deserve better,” he wrote. “They will not accept any producer price lower than GH¢6,000.”

He highlighted that global cocoa prices have reached historic highs recently. As of May 30, the International Cocoa Organization reported a price of $8,407.74 per tonne. London futures prices were around £6,069.67 per tonne.

“These are record prices—unprecedented in our history,” Nyarko stated. “Our farmers deserve a higher price for their produce.”

His comments reflect growing pressure from farmer associations and civil society groups. They argue that higher global cocoa prices should lead to fairer compensation for Ghanaian growers.

Nyarko urged the government to recognize the vital role of cocoa farmers in the economy. He stressed that honoring their contributions with fair pricing is both fair and necessary.
