Fin Minister calls for increased indigenous ownership in mining sector

"Ghana must not only mine gold; we must own a stake in it," said Dr. Forson. He emphasized that MIIF should pursue significant equity in mining ventures. This will ensure Ghanaian businesses benefit from our natural resources.

The newly inaugurated board is crucial for Ghana's sovereign wealth fund. They will navigate recent legislative changes and set a new strategic direction. Dr. Forson congratulated the board members and urged collaboration with MIIF’s management to improve performance.

He stated that the Ministry of Finance will monitor MIIF closely. This is to ensure compliance with its founding Act as amended. The board's role is to provide strategic leadership during this transition period.

Board Chairman Richard Kwame Asante thanked President John Dramani Mahama for his trust. He promised commitment to address challenges and turn them into growth opportunities. "The new board and management will work tirelessly for success," Mr. Asante said.

Justina Nelson, CEO of MIIF, highlighted the Fund’s role in managing mineral royalties. She stated, "MIIF’s mandate is clear: maximize long-term value from Ghana's mineral resources." The goal is to ensure sustainable economic benefits for future generations.

After the inauguration at the Ministry of Finance, board members met with MIIF’s management and staff. This shows their collaborative approach towards the fund's future direction.

The board is chaired by Richard Kwame Asante, a chartered accountant and Managing Partner of KAA. It includes Justina Nelson as CEO and other key members representing government institutions and parliamentary constituencies:

- Yaa Asantewaa Asante, Director at Ministry of Finance
- Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, Director of Communications at Ministry of Lands
