Finance Minister warns new SSNIT Board: ‘Do not sell state assets to politicians’

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has warned the new Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). He urged them not to sell state assets to politically exposed persons.

During the swearing-in ceremony in Accra, Dr. Forson emphasized the importance of public interest. He advised the board to avoid past mistakes that raised concerns about pension fund management.

“Please do not sell state assets to politicians,” he stated firmly. “The President will not accept it, and I will oppose it.”

His remarks come as scrutiny increases over SSNIT’s investment decisions. This includes attempts to divest stakes in key national assets. The Finance Minister insisted that actions must prioritize value for money, transparency, and long-term interests of pension contributors.

Dr. Forson reminded the board that SSNIT is a vital institution for every Ghanaian worker's retirement. Its leadership must be accountable to the public.

“The people of Ghana have entrusted their pension investments into your care,” he said. “Be mindful that you are investing our future and our money.”

He also encouraged the board to diversify its investment portfolio. He noted that SSNIT was “too heavy on real estates” and should explore other profitable sectors.

The new Board of Trustees, led by Nana Ansah Sasraku III, pledged to manage resources with integrity and foresight.
