The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has supported calls for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to refocus on its core mandate of trading cocoa beans, arguing that its involvement in road construction is beyond its expertise and imposes an unnecessary financial burden on the cocoa industry.
This call follows remarks by business executive Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong at the National Economic Dialogue 2025, where he criticized COCOBOD for straying from its primary role.
Former GAWU General Secretary Edward Kareweh echoed these concerns, questioning COCOBOD’s technical capacity for road construction and urging that another competent institution handle infrastructure in cocoa-growing areas.
He stressed the need for collaboration between COCOBOD and relevant state agencies to ensure cost-effective investments and proper infrastructure for the sector.
