**Alfred Tuah-Yeboah Calls for Balanced Commentary on Ghana’s Courts**
Mr. Alfred Tuah-Yeboah is a former Deputy Attorney General. He recently spoke about the need for balanced views on Ghana's courts.
He appeared on a radio program on Multimedia Networks last Saturday. Mr. Tuah-Yeboah acknowledged that the public can critique court judgments. However, he warned against generalizations that could harm public confidence in the judicial system.
His comments follow discussions about the judiciary. These discussions include a recent defamation suit between Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Kennedy Agyapong. Critics have compared Ghana’s legal system unfavorably to others, especially in the United States.
Mr. Tuah-Yeboah pointed out key differences between judicial systems. In the U.S., jury trials are common in civil suits. In contrast, Ghana relies on judges to decide cases.
He emphasized the need for reform in Ghana’s defamation laws. “We lack specific laws for prosecuting defamation,” he said. Currently, only small rules exist within CI47.
Mr. Tuah-Yeboah discussed the debate over jury trials versus single judges. He noted that both systems face challenges and require improvement.
He urged continued efforts to enhance the judicial system. Additionally, he encouraged informed and balanced public discussions about its strengths and weaknesses.
