Fuel stations to operate 24-hours as Edudzi calls for security agencies’ support

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Kudzo Eduzi Tameklo, spoke about a 24-hour economy in the petroleum sector. He said the NPA will work with security agencies to ensure safety at fuel stations nationwide.

Mr. Tameklo met with the Eastern Regional Minister and regional security heads in Koforidua on Wednesday. He stressed the need for strict regulations to protect the petroleum industry from crime. The sector is vulnerable to issues like fuel smuggling and illegal siphoning.

He noted that fuel is valuable, making it a target for criminals. "We need help from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and other security agencies," he stated. This includes collaboration with the Police, Customs, and Fire Service to combat fuel-related crimes.

Mr. Tameklo mentioned plans for specialized training for security agencies. This training aims to improve their ability to handle petroleum-related offenses. He emphasized that a successful 24-hour economy depends on consumer safety.

"Petroleum is hazardous; we cannot overlook safety concerns," he added. The NPA will collaborate closely with the Ghana National Fire Service and other agencies for safety.

His call for security collaboration is vital due to vulnerabilities at filling stations during late hours. Recently, masked robbers attacked a Total fuel station in Sekondi-Takoradi at dawn but failed to steal anything.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Ms. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, promised support from the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC). She assured cooperation in ensuring safety and compliance in the petroleum sector within her region.

She suggested integrating the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) into NPA operations across all regions. This would strengthen security and enhance collaboration efforts.

The meeting ended with a call for deeper cooperation between the NPA, security agencies, and regional authorities. The goal is to improve safety, enforcement, and regulatory compliance in the petroleum industry.
