Fuel stations to operate 24-hours as Edudzi calls for security agencies’ support

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Kudzo Eduzi Tameklo, announced plans for a 24-hour economy in the petroleum sector. The NPA will work with security agencies to ensure safety at fuel stations nationwide.

Mr. Tameklo spoke during a meeting in Koforidua with the Eastern Regional Minister and regional security heads. He stressed the need for strict regulations to protect the petroleum industry from crime. The sector faces risks like fuel smuggling, illegal siphoning, and fraud.

He noted that fuel is valuable and often targeted by criminals. To combat these crimes, he called for collaboration with the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and other security agencies like the Police and Customs.

Mr. Tameklo also mentioned plans for specialized training for security personnel on petroleum-related offenses. He emphasized that a successful 24-hour economy depends on ensuring safety for consumers and workers.

"Petroleum is hazardous; we cannot overlook safety concerns," he said. The NPA will partner with the Ghana National Fire Service to enhance safety measures.

His call for collaboration is vital due to vulnerabilities at filling stations during late hours. Recently, masked robbers attacked a Total fuel station in Sekondi-Takoradi but failed to steal anything because the manager had taken the safe keys.

Eastern Regional Minister Ms. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey pledged support from the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC). She promised full cooperation to help ensure safety and compliance in the Eastern Region's petroleum sector.

She suggested integrating the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) into NPA operations across all regions to improve security collaboration. She praised NPA’s commitment to consumer protection and regulatory enforcement.

The meeting concluded with calls for stronger collaboration among NPA, security agencies, and regional authorities to enhance safety and compliance in the petroleum industry.
