Energy Minister-designate John Jinapor has highlighted fuel supply gaps and financial instability as the primary challenges in Ghana’s energy sector.
Speaking during his vetting, he noted a 40–60 mmcf/d fuel shortfall despite contributions from ENI, Jubilee, TEN fields, and Nigeria Gas, necessitating reliance on alternative fuels like light crude oil.
He plans to bridge this gap by boosting gas supply by 35 mmcf/d through reconditioning efforts.
Jinapor also revealed mounting debts, including $377 million owed to Karpowership and over $100 million to Tullow Oil, which threaten power supply continuity.
Despite these issues, he expressed confidence in Ghana’s upgraded power grid, with a dependable capacity of 4,800 MW, sufficient to meet peak demand. He assured Ghanaians that resolving these challenges will ensure reliable, affordable energy.
