Traders on the Kaneshie footbridge must leave by April 2025. This order comes after a joint inspection by several authorities. These include the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Ministry of Local Government.
The inspection took place on Wednesday. It focused on the condition of footbridges in Accra, especially near Kaneshie Market. This area is one of the busiest commercial centers in the city.
Douglas N.K. Annoful, the AMA's Coordinating Director, expressed concerns about safety. He noted that traders are putting extra strain on the already weakened bridge. This raises significant safety issues for pedestrians.
Mr. Annoful mentioned past efforts to relocate traders to safer areas. Unfortunately, these efforts received minimal compliance from traders. He stressed that pedestrian safety must come first.
The April 2025 deadline will be strictly enforced to avoid accidents. Authorities say this move is part of a larger plan for infrastructure safety and maintenance in Accra.
