GBC Board’s appointment intact - Director-General - Ghana Business News

Prof. Amin Alhassan's Statement on GBC Board Legitimacy

Professor Amin Alhassan is the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). He stated that the GBC Board is legitimate, despite rumors.

He explained that the National Media Commission (NMC) constituted the Board. The Executive did not create it, and its mandate remains valid. The NMC has not revoked this mandate.

Speaking at a staff durbar at GBC headquarters, he referenced Article 167(c) of the 1992 Constitution. This article protects state-owned media from executive control. He criticized claims to the contrary as coming from those “refusing to learn.”

The durbar included board members, management, and staff. It aimed to address recent events affecting GBC’s image and business outlook.

Unionized staff had previously called for Prof. Alhassan’s resignation. They argued his leadership did not align with GBC’s goals.

At a press conference on March 20, 2025, Mr. Sam Nat Kevor spoke out against him. He declared Prof. Alhassan “unwelcome” but assured workers would protect GBC’s role in national security.

In another development, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department suspended Prof. Alhassan’s salary starting March 2025. They cited financial clearance requirements for his position.

A letter from Mr. Kwasi Agyei explained this decision further. Section 25(5) of the Public Financial Management Act requires clearance for appointments and renewals.

This includes retrospective approval for Prof. Alhassan’s four-year contract from October 2, 2023, to September 2027.

Prof. Alhassan expressed concern over misinformation affecting GBC's reputation. He noted that a diplomatic mission withdrew from a partnership due to instability at GBC.

He warned that negative publicity could harm operations significantly. “When we have bad press about GBC, we will suffer,” he stated.

He shared troubling figures for January to March and urged staff to prepare for challenges ahead.

Prof. Alhassan encouraged resolving issues internally while emphasizing unity and productivity among staff.

Mr. Samuel Kojo Intsiaba is the Chairman of the GBC Board. He called for industrial harmony between management and staff in today’s competitive media landscape.

He acknowledged that internal tensions are normal but should be managed constructively.

During the durbar, he read a letter from the NMC dated March 25, 2025. This letter confirmed Prof. Alhassan's tenure renewal on February 26, 2024.

The renewal was publicly announced during the introduction of GBC's new Board on August 13, 2024.

The NMC urged communication about this renewal with all staff members and offered clarifications as needed.

Staff raised concerns about logistics and compensation during the durbar meeting while praising Prof. Alhassan's leadership efforts in rebranding GBC and enhancing its social media presence.

They also requested that National Service personnel in social media be absorbed into permanent roles to maintain digital engagement.
