GIFEC Administrator pays courtesy call on CEO of Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications

Dr. Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer, the Acting Administrator of GIFEC, visited Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey. He is the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications. The meeting took place at the Chamber’s offices in Accra.

The discussion aimed to strengthen collaboration between both institutions. They focused on advancing Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

Dr. Rashid-Computer shared the government’s vision for GIFEC. He emphasized its transition into a Digital Economy and Innovations Development Fund. He also highlighted GIFEC's role in promoting digital inclusion and ICT-driven innovations.

He urged the Chamber to help recover a mandatory 1% revenue contribution from telecom companies. This funding supports GIFEC’s digital inclusion initiatives, including projects like GRT&DIP and Community ICT Centres.

Dr. Rashid-Computer stressed the importance of rebranding GIFEC as a key agency in Ghana's digital efforts. He wants its impact recognized in improving ICT access for underserved communities.

He mentioned an upcoming initiative called "One Million Coding Professionals." It will launch in April 2025 under the President's direction. GIFEC will play a major role in this initiative.

The program aims to equip Ghanaians with essential digital skills like AI and cybersecurity. This will help position Ghana competitively in the global digital economy. Dr. Rashid-Computer requested support from the Chamber for mentorship and internship opportunities.

Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey welcomed Dr. Rashid-Computer and his team warmly. He praised GIFEC’s work in promoting digital inclusion and universal ICT access.

Ashigbey reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to collaborating with GIFEC on compliance issues with telecom contributions. He stated that they recognize GIFEC's critical role in Ghana's digital transformation.

The Chamber will engage members to ensure timely contributions to GIFEC are made, he added. They also plan to explore deeper collaboration on digital skills development and infrastructure expansion.

Ashigbey expressed readiness to support GIFEC’s rebranding efforts as well, promising close cooperation to enhance its impact on Ghana's digitalization drive.

The meeting ended with a mutual commitment to strengthen partnerships between GIFEC and the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, aiming for broader digital access for all Ghanaians.

Attending from GIFEC were several officials, including Alhaji Yahaya Zakaria Osman and Mr. Henry Agyeman Boateng among others.

From the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications were Mr. Louis Bobbie Osei, Mr. David Aryeetey, and Mrs. Alaina Dedry-Amuzu among others as well.
