The Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) has called for the urgent passage of the reviewed Labour Act, describing the current legislation as outdated and insufficient for addressing modern labor challenges.

At the GMWU National Executive Council meeting in Accra, Secretary General Abdul-Moomin Gbana urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to prioritize this reform before leaving office.

Gbana highlighted a decade-long decline in quality employment, marked by a shift from permanent roles to precarious arrangements like temporary and casual contracts. This transition has increased job insecurity, reduced workplace protections, and eroded trade union rights and collective bargaining coverage.

He also criticized widespread corruption, which costs Ghana an estimated $3 billion annually equivalent to the amount sought from the IMF. Gbana called on trade unions to actively combat corruption, which he described as a major impediment to national progress.
