Prof. Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, has raised concerns over Ghana’s heavy reliance on Burkina Faso for tomato imports despite having the potential for local production.
During a visit to Paga, he noted that Burkina Faso, with less fertile land, successfully produces and exports tomatoes due to government support, including irrigation and agricultural investments.
In contrast, Ghana’s dependence on rainfall hampers farming. Prof. Gyampo urged the government to invest in irrigation and agricultural infrastructure to achieve self-sufficiency by the end of President Mahama’s second term.
While advocating for local production, he also emphasized maintaining strong trade relations with Burkina Faso and learning from its agricultural strategies to boost Ghana’s vegetable production and economic growth.
