GTPCW sues over NPA board representation

The General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCW) has taken legal action. They are suing Mr. George Nyaunu from the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union. He allegedly misrepresented himself as a GTPCW representative on the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) board.

The GTPCW is seeking an injunction against Mr. Nyaunu. They want to stop him from being sworn in or attending board meetings. The Union officially nominated their National Chairman, Mr. Bernard Owusu, for this position.

Mr. Owusu also serves as the National Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). The nomination was sent to the Presidency, Chief of Staff, and Ministry of Energy and Green Transition. However, President John Mahama nominated Mr. Nyaunu instead for the new board.

This decision has caused controversy within the GTPCW. It has led them to seek legal redress in court. The ongoing legal battle may delay the swearing-in of the new NPA board.

This delay could hinder important decision-making processes at the Authority. Tensions are rising among tanker drivers, with some supporting Mr. Nyaunu and others backing Mr. Owusu. This division has reportedly disrupted petroleum supply and distribution nationwide.

Some industry observers believe Mr. Owusu's experience warrants fresh leadership on the board. Others are skeptical about Mr. Nyaunu’s appointment, claiming he favors NPA over workers' interests.

Amid this crisis, there are calls for a neutral figure to be appointed by the government. This person should understand challenges faced by petroleum worker unions and represent all parties effectively on the NPA board.
