The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) plans a nationwide protest. This is in support of secondhand clothing dealers. GUTA claims there is a campaign to dismantle this industry.
The announcement follows a strike by the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association. They are responding to defamatory statements from the OR Foundation. This organization criticizes Ghana’s secondhand clothing trade.
At a press briefing on April 10, 2025, GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng spoke out. He said the union will not remain silent while the sector is undermined. The industry provides jobs for thousands and supports informal commerce.
Dr. Obeng described the planned demonstration as unity against discrediting efforts. He called for accountability and a forensic audit into these activities. He urged the Attorney General's Department and Ministry of the Interior to take action.
He warned that division among traders could lead to conflict. Dr. Obeng emphasized that they want to avoid such issues. He stated, "The government must intervene quickly or we will protest nationwide."
He added that this would involve all sectors of trade joining them. They aim to support their fellow traders in the secondhand clothing industry against harmful groups spreading discontent.
