GhIE and Engineering Council to get rid of unlicensed engineers by July 2025

The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) is taking action. They are working with the Engineering Council to eliminate unlicensed engineers by July 2025.

This initiative aims to improve the profession and build public trust in engineering.

Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse, President of GhIE, spoke with Joy Business. He said this crackdown supports professional standards in engineering. Only qualified and certified individuals should practice in the field.

“This exercise is not punitive,” Ing. Hesse explained. “It protects the integrity of the profession.” He emphasized that licensed professionals must be accountable and competent.

The regulatory action will target individuals and firms without valid licenses from the Engineering Council. This council regulates engineering practice in Ghana.

Ing. Hesse pointed out that unlicensed practitioners harm the profession's credibility. They also pose risks to public safety, especially in construction, energy, and infrastructure.

“We are educating stakeholders about licensing,” he said. “Those not regularized by July 2025 may face sanctions.” This could include being barred from practicing engineering.

The GhIE urges all engineers to regularize their status and renew licenses if needed. The Council has started consultations and public education campaigns for a smooth transition.

This move comes as Ghana experiences increased infrastructure development and technological growth. Professional oversight in engineering is crucial during this time. Industry experts support this decision, believing it will improve operations, reduce substandard work, and enhance safety compliance.
