The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) has lauded the government’s decision to transfer the mining leases of Bogoso/Prestea Mines to Heath Goldfields.

Heath Goldfields took over the mines from Future Global Resources (FGR) in November 2024, following the latter's financial struggles that led to the cessation of operations in December 2023.

In a statement signed by GMWU General Secretary Abdul-Moomin Gbana, the Union expressed confidence in the new arrangement, anticipating capital investment to revitalize the mines and ensure sustainable growth.

It dismissed FGR’s attempts to challenge the government’s decision, emphasizing FGR’s inability to manage the mines effectively due to financial incapacity and debts exceeding $60 million, including arrears to workers and statutory obligations since 2021.

The Union pledged its commitment to collaborate with Heath Goldfields to revive the mines and improve livelihoods for affected workers and their families.
