Ghana Parliament approves GH¢2.8b for road maintenance - Ghana Business News

Parliament has approved GH¢2.8 billion for road maintenance this year. This funding aims to improve the transport of goods and services.

In 2024, 43 percent of the country’s roads were maintained. This included re-shaping, gravelling, and patching potholes.

Mr. Isaac Adjei Mensah is the Chairman of Parliament's Roads and Transport Committee. He spoke to the media at Parliament House in Accra. He stated that road maintenance is part of the government's resetting agenda.

The government inherited a total debt of GH¢105 billion in the road sector. There is also a GH¢109 billion commitment to road contractors. This commitment includes ongoing projects, stalled projects, and signed contracts.

Mr. Adjei Mensah mentioned efforts to reintroduce road tolls using innovative technology. This move aims to boost government revenue mobilization.

He is optimistic about the government's $10 billion strategic infrastructure plan called "Big Push." He believes it will improve road conditions across the country.

Meanwhile, on March 29, Parliament passed the Appropriation Bill early Saturday morning. This bill authorizes Ghana's Finance Minister to spend public funds on proposed programs and projects outlined in the budget.

As a result, the government can access funds from the Consolidated Fund and other public resources.
