Ghana government owes Zoomlion GH¢1.2b for unpaid waste management services – Minister - Ghana Business News

The government owes Zoomlion Ghana Limited GH¢1.2 billion. This debt covers services provided over the last two years.

Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, shared this information in a media interview. He expressed concern about the debt to Zoomlion.

Mr. Ibrahim emphasized the need for collaboration with private waste management companies. He specifically mentioned working with Zoomlion to tackle waste management issues in Ghana. The focus is on recycling plastic waste.

He highlighted the importance of strong partnerships with private firms like Zoomlion. Mr. Ibrahim praised Zoomlion for its advanced sanitation infrastructure.

Zoomlion has made significant investments in waste treatment and recycling facilities across Ghana. The government lacks similar infrastructure to manage daily waste in cities.

He warned that a nationwide sanitation crisis could occur if Zoomlion stops operations. He recalled past practices where faecal waste was dumped into the sea, causing health hazards.

Mr. Ibrahim noted that Zoomlion’s liquid waste recycling plants convert sewage into compost and charcoal. This aligns with a 2016 ban on sea disposal initiated by former President Dramani Mahama.

He called for more government attention to sanitation issues. Recently, there was a cholera outbreak in coastal regions like Cape Coast, Winneba, and Takoradi on October 24, 2023.

Mr. Ibrahim advocated for increased public education on sanitation risks to prevent future outbreaks.
