Ghana is top destination for Indian investors - High Commissioner

Manish Gupta – Indian High Commissioner to Ghana

Mr. Manish Gupta, the Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, spoke about investment. He said Ghana is the top choice for Indian investors. Nearly 900 projects have been established in the country over two decades.

Mr. Gupta noted that India is one of Ghana's leading trade partners. Bilateral trade between the two countries amounts to around $3 billion. Key sectors for Indian investment include agriculture, health, education, railways, SMEs, infrastructure, and telecom.

He made these remarks at a dinner reception hosted by the High Commission. The event celebrated India's 76th Republic Day and the 75th anniversary of its Constitution. It featured performances showcasing Indian culture and was themed “Swarnim Bharat – Virasataur Vikas,” meaning Golden India – Heritage and Development.

Mr. Gupta emphasized that the celebration highlighted mutual progress between India and Ghana. He stated that people-to-people connections are vital to their relationship. The strong Indian-Ghanaian community of nearly 15,000 serves as a bridge between both nations.

He mentioned that some Ghanaian players now participate in the Indian Football League. Mr. Gupta reflected on the deep-rooted bilateral relations based on trust since Nehru and Nkrumah’s time.

This strong relationship has led to significant projects like Jubilee House and the Foreign Services Institute. The Ghana India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT has trained over 50,000 people in two decades.

“Cooperation programs and education scholarships have seen good uptake,” he added. Over 4,000 beneficiaries have benefited from these programs in Ghana.

The largest development partnership project is the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line. This project will receive around $450 million financing from the Indian EXIM Bank in 2024.

The dinner reception was attended by various government officials. Mr. Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture, was the Chief Guest at this event.

Other dignitaries included Samuel George (Minister-designate for Communication), Madam Emelia Arthur (Minister for Fisheries), and former officials like Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.

Mr. Opoku praised India's contributions to Ghana’s socio-economic development over the years. He emphasized that future engagements would strengthen ties between both countries.

“India is the largest destination for Ghanaian exports,” he stated. He noted that Ghana enjoys a positive trade balance with India due to gold imports accounting for nearly 80% of total imports from Ghana.
