The World Bank’s Food Security Update February 2025 reveals that Ghana has the highest food inflation among lower-middle-income African nations, at 28.3% in December 2024, followed by Egypt (20.8%) and Zambia (19.2%).
Domestic food price inflation remains high in many low- and middle-income countries, with over 5% inflation in most low-income and lower-middle-income nations between October 2024 and January 2025, and food prices exceeding overall inflation in 56% of 164 countries.
The update also notes that since January 2025, global agricultural prices have risen maize and wheat by 3% and 5%, respectively, while rice fell by 10%.
Year-on-year, maize is 10% higher, wheat 6% lower, and rice 19% lower; compared to January 2020, maize is 27% higher, wheat 2% lower, and rice 14% higher.
