Policy Analyst Derrick Xatse has lauded the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) for postponing its scheduled pipeline maintenance to avert a potential energy crisis in Ghana.
Initially planned for January 20, 2025, the maintenance will now occur from February 3 to March 2, during which gas flow to Ghana will be halted. The decision aligns with WAPCo’s five-year inspection protocol.
Xatse commended the move and emphasized the need for equitable treatment across governments, suggesting a consistent approach to postponements. While acknowledging gas as the cheapest fuel option despite logistical and cost challenges, he urged the government to use the extended time to address fuel shortages and devise sustainable solutions.
Amid Ghana’s fuel crisis, Xatse’s comments highlight the urgency of balancing immediate needs with long-term policies, underscoring the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to stabilize supply and manage prices.
