MP Samuel Abu Jinapor has urged the Government to clarify the proposed Gold Board’s mandate amid growing concerns in the mining sector.
A former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Jinapor warned that the concept one of the NDC’s manifesto promises for economic revitalization raises more questions than answers.
The Board, introduced during a technical committee meeting on January 27, 2025, by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson and endorsed by President Mahama as a means to regulate the gold industry, stabilize the cedi, and boost revenue from exports, has sparked apprehension.
Critics question how it will coexist with established institutions like the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, MIIF, and the Bank of Ghana and whether it might duplicate or absorb their statutory functions, thereby jeopardizing Ghana’s reputable mining regulatory regime.
