Gold sector welcomes extension of licensing deadline

GoldBod announced a change after receiving many petitions from industry players. These groups requested more time to adjust to the new regulations.

The board stated that anyone with a licence from the old PMMC or Ministry can continue buying and selling gold until June 21, 2025. After this date, only entities licensed under GoldBod can legally trade in gold. Using old licences beyond this deadline will violate the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) and may lead to penalties.

GoldBod clarified that applications for new licences can still be submitted after the deadline. However, these applications will not allow operations during that interim period. From May 22, 2025, any export rights linked to licences from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will no longer be valid. Only GoldBod will have the authority to export gold.

Kwaku Amoah, CEO of CLGB, called the extension a timely intervention. He noted it provides legitimate operators time to align with the new framework without disrupting their businesses. Mr. Amoah welcomed this decision as it shows GoldBod's willingness to listen and collaborate for better regulation.

The CLGB urged all licence holders to use this grace period wisely. They should regularise their operations and meet new requirements. The CLGB is ready to work with GoldBod and other agencies for responsible mineral trading in Ghana.
