Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson called the Goldbod initiative a game changer for Ghana’s economy.
He noted its importance in stabilizing the cedi and boosting foreign exchange inflows. The initiative also aims to create sustainable jobs.
At a recent meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Myriam Montrat, Dr. Forson emphasized the government's commitment to Goldbod. He explained that it will improve tracking and management of gold exports. It also supports broader goals like currency stability and long-term growth.
“There is so much to gain from this initiative,” he stated. “Goldbod will give us better control over our gold exports.” He added that it would help strengthen foreign exchange reserves.
Dr. Forson mentioned that Goldbod is part of a strategy to reduce pressure on the cedi. He stressed prioritizing job creation over short-term revenue.
He acknowledged recent mismanagement within Cocobod but urged caution against discrediting Goldbod's vision. “Cocobod has faced challenges, but we must recognize its contributions,” he said.
The Goldbod initiative builds on Cocobod's legacy with a focus on transparency and efficiency. Dr. Forson expressed confidence that Goldbod will be operational soon.
He also mentioned corrective actions taken under the IMF program to address structural issues from the previous administration.
The Canadian High Commissioner congratulated Dr. Forson on his appointment. She reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to its partnership with Ghana, especially in agriculture and technical vocational education and training (TVET).
