The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, has announced the cancellation of the close fishing season for artisanal fishermen in 2025, while industrial trawlers must still observe the two-month restriction. Speaking in Tema, she emphasized balancing fisherfolk livelihoods with sustainability.
The close season, introduced to replenish fish stocks, was supported by scientists to combat overfishing and illegal practices. However, Minister Arthur’s decision fulfills President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign promise to support artisanal fishermen while maintaining traditional conservation methods, such as the Tuesday fishing ban.
To mitigate the impact, scientists will designate conservation zones, including around Cape Three Points. Additionally, the Minister demanded accountability from premix fuel committees on funds meant for community development. Experts warn that without strict conservation measures, fish stocks could face further depletion.
