Gov’t hands over ECG revenue, distribution operations to private partner

The initiative is not a full privatization of ECG. It is a private sector participation (PSP) model. This model aims to attract private investment and introduce innovation. It also seeks to reduce inefficiencies.

Gyan-Mensah stated, “We are partnering with the private sector.” He emphasized building a resilient energy industry for economic growth. The government will ensure Ghanaian consumers are protected.

This move addresses ongoing challenges in the energy sector. Issues include widespread power theft and revenue leakage. The new PSP arrangement aims to fix these problems. It will bring in technical expertise from the private sector.

To manage the transition, a technical committee has been formed. This committee will assess proposals from interested private entities. They will recommend the best partner for ECG.

Gyan-Mensah stressed that success depends on collaboration. Both public and private stakeholders must work together.

The ECG Vendors Forum gathered over 350 vendors and officials. Representatives from TextGenesys Ltd., ECG’s digital technology partner, were also present. They developed the ‘Unfield Vending’ platform with GCB Bank.

This platform modernizes power credit purchases for vendors. It allows them to self-redeem commissions easily. ECG can reconcile payments in real-time through this system.

The technology improves transparency and simplifies bill payments for customers. TGL Systems Managing Director Jeremiah Brown-Coleman highlighted its importance in revenue collection.

He said, “This digital solution simplifies the revenue collection process.” It ensures secure, real-time reconciliation and strengthens ECG’s mechanisms.

ECG Managing Director Julius Kwame Kpekpena praised the forum's significance. He called it a pivotal moment for ECG’s operations.

“This marks a new chapter of inclusivity and innovation,” he noted. The government assures that the PSP model will benefit consumers while supporting Ghana’s energy transition and economic development goals.
