The government has borrowed GHȼ59.68 billion from the domestic money market within seven weeks of assuming office in 2025. This borrowing, conducted through Treasury Bill Auctions, began on January 10, just three days after taking office.
According to Bank of Ghana data, the government has consistently borrowed through 91-day, 182-day, and 365-day Treasury Bills, with weekly amounts ranging from GHȼ7.60 billion to GHȼ9.6 billion. The highest borrowing occurred on February 21, totaling GHȼ9.6 billion.
The borrowing trend highlights the government's reliance on the domestic bond market to finance its activities, raising concerns about debt sustainability and economic stability.
