The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) is worried. They are concerned about a new 10 percent tariff on exports to the United States.
President Donald Trump announced these tariffs in response to an economic emergency. The new baseline tax affects imports from all countries.
Samson Awingobit Asaki, the Executive Secretary of IEAG, reacted strongly. He said this tariff will hurt Ghana's exports to the USA. It eliminates duty-free access under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
Mr. Asaki stated, “What the US government has done is a big blow to us.” He noted that existing agreements with the US now face challenges due to this tariff. Exports will incur an additional 10 percent duty, increasing costs for exporters.
He warned that this could reduce production of goods exported from Ghana. This may lead to job losses among affected workers in those sectors.
Mr. Asaki urged the Ghanaian government to address this issue promptly. He emphasized its importance for international relations and business impacts.
He added, “It will be a challenge for the business community.” Higher import costs may discourage customers from buying products due to increased prices.
