Former Energy Minister Herbert Krapa and John Jinapor, Co-chair of the Akufo–Addo–Mahama transition team’s subcommittee on Energy, exchanged accusations regarding Ghana’s energy sector.
Jinapor warned of potential load shedding during the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPCo) maintenance from January 20 to February 16, 2025, citing depleted fuel stocks and a lack of contingency measures by the outgoing government.
He claimed that the Akufo-Addo administration coerced WAPCo to delay the maintenance initially scheduled for October 2024 and failed to procure liquid fuel to supplement gas shortfalls, risking a 1,000 MW power deficit.
Krapa dismissed Jinapor’s claims, attributing power stability under Akufo-Addo to proper planning and urging the new administration to address fuel needs rather than assign blame. The energy sector faces mounting challenges amid transitioning leadership.
