Higher proportion of urban employees work excessively affecting productivity, their health – GSS report

Male workers are more affected by excessive hours than female workers Male workers are more affected by excessive hours than female workers

The Ghana Statistical Service’s "National Report on Productivity, Employment, and Growth" reveals that workers in urban centers are more likely to work excessively defined as over 48 hours per week compared to those in rural areas.

Excessive working hours, which wear out workers and negatively impact productivity, health, safety, and work-life balance, are a growing concern. The report estimates that about 7% of employed individuals exceeded 48 hours weekly, though this figure declined to 4% in the third quarter of 2023.

Additionally, the data shows that male workers are more affected by excessive hours than female workers. These findings highlight the pressing need to address decent work conditions, especially in urban areas and among males, to improve overall well-being and sustainable economic growth.
