President John Mahama has revealed that his administration inherited an energy sector on the brink of collapse due to unpaid debts by the Akufo-Addo government to power producers.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address, Mahama disclosed that the previous government collected GH¢45 billion in energy levies over eight years but left GH¢70 billion in debt as of December 2024.
This financial distress pushed many power producers to the verge of closure, threatening energy supply and economic stability.
He assured Ghanaians that his Energy Minister, John Jinapor, has begun restorative measures to stabilize the sector and ensure affordable electricity.
