Mark Badu Aboagye, CEO of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), has criticized Ghana’s current 10% betting tax rate, deeming it ineffective in reducing gambling activities.
Speaking on Joy News' PM Express Business Edition, he suggested that the tax rate should be increased to serve as a deterrent. He emphasized that socioeconomic challenges, including the lack of alternative income sources, drive individuals into betting.
Badu Aboagye argued that betting contributes minimally to national economic growth compared to productive sectors like agriculture and manufacturing, describing it as an emotional, non-productive activity.
The debate intensifies as the Mahama government plans to eliminate the betting tax in its first budget in March, sparking discussions on whether this move will promote gambling or if alternative measures are necessary.
