Ing. Frank Kofi Apeagyei: The genius whose IFATSEA presidency can jet-propel Ghana’s aviation industry beyond the skies

Ing. Frank Kofi Apeagyei (MBA, MSc., PMP) is a notable aviation systems engineer. He serves as the Director of the Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy (GATA). In October 2024, he made history by being elected President of the International Federation of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Associations (IFATSEA). This election took place during its 52nd General Assembly in Las Vegas, USA. He is the first indigenous African to hold this prestigious position.

On March 4, 2025, Bilal Malkawi from the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) congratulated Ing. Apeagyei. He praised the IFATSEA Executive Board for their leadership. The ITF reaffirmed its partnership with IFATSEA, emphasizing shared commitments to workers' rights and solidarity. Malkawi called for collaboration to recognize the role of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEPs) in aviation.

Ing. Apeagyei was also honored during Ghana’s “Ghana Month” celebrations. His election is a historic milestone for Africa and presents opportunities for Ghana's aviation sector and economy. He attended Koforidua Secondary Technical School and will receive the 2025 Mmarimamma Global Impact Award on August 2, 2025.

Founded in 1972, IFATSEA represents ATSEPs globally. These experts ensure safety and reliability in air traffic management systems. Ing. Apeagyei has over ten years of experience on IFATSEA’s Executive Board, including two terms as Regional Director for Africa. His presidency highlights Ghana's role in global aviation diplomacy.

As IFATSEA President, Ing. Apeagyei will influence international aviation safety policy. This gives Ghana a chance to shape global agendas and address challenges faced by African states like limited resources and training infrastructure.

GATA is recognized as one of West Africa’s top aviation training institutions. With IFATSEA's support, GATA can become a continental center of excellence. This would enhance local workforce competence and position Ghana as an ATSEP training hub in Africa.

Aviation is a high-tech industry that requires modern infrastructure. Ing. Apeagyei’s influence can attract partnerships with technology providers and development agencies to modernize CNS/ATM infrastructure in Ghana.

A stronger aviation industry boosts tourism, trade, logistics, and skilled labor demand across the economy. By improving its aviation infrastructure and technical personnel capabilities, Ghana can create jobs both within the sector and related industries.

Ing. Apeagyei’s election brings national pride to Ghana and Africa as a whole. As the first Black African leader of IFATSEA, he showcases African expertise in global aviation.

The ITF's support signals ongoing international solidarity with IFATSEA's mission to defend workers' rights and improve aviation safety standards for African personnel.

Ing. Frank Kofi Apeagyei’s presidency marks a pivotal moment for Ghana and Africa alike. It offers an opportunity to align national policies with international goals while investing in people and infrastructure.

As attention turns toward this Ghanaian leader at a global level, decisive action is needed to translate his leadership into real progress—both in aviation safety and economic growth.
