Insulate ECG from political meddling – Manteaw

ECG ECG

Dr. Steve Manteaw, a civil society activist, has called for insulating the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from political interference rather than privatizing it.

He expressed opposition to privatization, citing a lack of successful precedents in Ghana’s public sector and advocating for reforms similar to those of GCB and Goil to enhance ECG’s performance.

This statement follows the inauguration of a seven-member committee by Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor to explore private-sector involvement in ECG’s operations.

The Minister highlighted longstanding challenges like inefficiencies, financial losses, and debt, proposing private-sector participation to boost resources, expertise, and efficiency.

Jinapor emphasized a non-partisan approach, ensuring transparency and public buy-in through competitive tender processes, aiming to revitalize ECG and improve electricity delivery.
