President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Joseph Bukari Nikpe, MP for Saboba, as Minister-Designate for Transport, part of the third batch of ministerial appointments submitted to Parliament for approval.
If confirmed, Nikpe will oversee the critical transport portfolio, addressing infrastructure and economic connectivity challenges.
Key tasks include responding to concerns from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which is advocating for fare increases due to rising operational costs from fuel price hikes and currency depreciation.
GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer, Abass Imoro, emphasized the union's readiness to negotiate with the Transport Ministry once Nikpe is vetted and approved.
Other nominees include Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo for Labour, Samuel Nartey George for Communication, and Adjei Kenneth Gilbert for Works and Housing. The Appointments Committee will vet the nominees in the coming weeks.
