KMA enforces 15% fare reduction in Kumasi

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has deployed police officers to major roads. They aim to enforce a 15% reduction in transport fares in Kumasi.

This decision comes after reports of commercial drivers ignoring the directive. The fare reduction took effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

On Monday, May 26, the assembly issued a warning. Any driver who does not charge the reduced fare commits a criminal offense.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) stressed the need for compliance. Most drivers are following the new fare structure, but some unregistered unions are not.

The union is counting on law enforcement to ensure compliance. They encourage the public to report any violations.

“We request the public’s cooperation as we restore order on our roads,” said KMA in their statement.

Meanwhile, CUTS International has called for stricter penalties for non-compliant drivers. They suggest deregistering and banning these drivers from operating.

They also recommend issuing visible stickers to compliant drivers for easy identification by law enforcement.
