Illegal miners, called galamseyers, are labeled "dangerous terrorists" by Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. He made this statement during a media briefing in Accra on April 3.
The Minister expressed deep concern about the environmental crisis caused by galamsey activities. He highlighted alarming pollution levels in Ghana's water resources. Turbidity readings have reached between 5,000 and 12,000, far exceeding the safe limit of 500.
"We are essentially drinking poison," he warned. This underscores the urgent need for decisive action against illegal mining.
Buah condemned illegal miners for prioritizing profit over public health. "We can't allow a few people to make money at our expense," he stated. He urged the public to see galamseyers as a serious threat to health and the environment.
Despite his strong stance against illegal mining, Buah supports legitimate small-scale miners. He emphasized the government's commitment to providing guidance and resources for responsible mining practices.
His remarks come as the government intensifies efforts to combat illegal mining. Communities are struggling with polluted water sources and deforestation due to these activities. The administration aims to prioritize sustainable practices while addressing environmental challenges posed by galamsey operations.
