Dignitaries attended the event, including government officials and business leaders.
Garmy Sy, Managing Director of MSC Ghana, expressed her excitement. She reaffirmed the company's commitment to Ghana's maritime growth.
“The arrival of 24,000 TEU ultra-large container vessels is a major achievement,” she said. This development enhances trade infrastructure and fosters economic growth in Africa.
Ms. Sy noted that these vessels create jobs and promote sustainable growth for Ghana. MSC has been active in Africa for 50 years and in Ghana for 17 years. “Today’s deployment marks the next major step in this journey,” she added.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe delivered the keynote address. He reaffirmed the government's dedication to advancing the maritime sector under President John Dramani Mahama's leadership.
“MPS has become a model of successful partnership in Ghana,” he stated. He urged all stakeholders to create an enabling environment for business growth.
He assured investors that “Ghana has the facilities and expertise needed for trade.” The government aims to transform the overall business climate.
Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, Director-General of GPHA, praised the port workforce for safely handling the giant vessel.
“This achievement results from MPS's strategic partnership with the Government of Ghana,” he said. The terminal represents job creation and faster trade opportunities.
Gilbert Capoellini, Vice President for MSC’s Far East to Sub-Saharan Africa region, highlighted MSC TÜRKIYE’s significance. It enhances services to West Africa.
“Deployed on MSC Africa Express Service, it connects Asia’s economies to West Africa,” he explained. Tema is its first port of call after traveling through China, South Korea, and Singapore.
Mohammed Samara, CEO of Meridian Port Services Ltd., reflected on their vision from nearly a decade ago. In 2015, they aimed to handle ultra-large vessels under President Mahama's leadership.
“Today, that vision is alive as we welcome one of the world’s largest ships,” he said. Their motto is: ‘We connect, you thrive’.
They are opening access to markets beyond Ghana with greater efficiency. Transit times from Asia to Tema have been cut from 40–50 days to under 20 days.
