MPs assure Zoomlion of gov't's prompt debt settlement

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources has reassured Zoomlion Ghana Limited. The government will settle its outstanding debts for sanitation services. Zoomlion, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, is owed 1.2 billion Ghana cedis.

On April 23, 2025, Mr. John Oti Bless spoke to the media during a tour. He visited the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant in Adjen-Kotoku. The Finance Minister has pledged to clear these debts, including those owed to Zoomlion.

"About GHS 13 billion has been budgeted for this purpose," he said. "I trust the Finance Minister will fulfil this promise." He expressed concern about unpaid services from Zoomlion.

During a visit to one of their warehouses, he noted many imported tricycles were waiting for payment. "How can a company function effectively without resources?" he asked.

Committee members praised Zoomlion's investment in sanitation. "I am truly impressed by their level of investment," Mr. Oti Bless stated. He added that Zoomlion's facilities are functioning effectively.

He commended their innovation and productivity as well. He urged Ghanaians to support local products for public health reasons. "This fight concerns every Ghanaian," he emphasized.

Mr. Oti Bless highlighted challenges in implementing effective sanitation management in communities and streets. "We want stronger action where it matters most," he said.

He called for a dedicated sanitation fund and public education campaigns. "Sanitation requires a dedicated source of funding," he recommended.

If 40 pesewas is raised through levies, he suggested splitting it evenly between sanitation and energy initiatives for real change.

Mr. Oti Bless stressed the importance of public awareness and support for sanitation initiatives as well as media involvement in education campaigns.

Many District Assemblies' bylaws are not gazetted, making them unenforceable, he noted.

Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, urged committee support for enforcing environmental bylaws against offenders.

"What we do goes beyond cleaning; we tackle cholera and improve public health," he explained.

He lamented inadequate incentives and recognition for vital work in this sector. "The work often lacks recognition, which is discouraging," he said while requesting assistance with taxes on essential equipment.

With proper support, Dr. Agyepong believes Zoomlion can achieve even more for the country: “Your support can help us do even more.”
