President John Mahama's Message on African Union Day
President John Dramani Mahama marked African Union (AU) Day with a call for investment in education. He emphasized the need to promote understanding of African history and culture. This task requires courage, determination, and unity.
The President shared his message for the 62nd AU Day. The theme this year is “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.” The AU consists of 55 member states across Africa. It was launched in 2002, succeeding the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).
AU Day, also known as Africa Day, commemorates the OAU's founding on May 25, 1963. President Mahama noted that the AU has declared 2025 as the year for justice through reparations. He expressed his commitment to this cause.
He stated that slavery, colonialism, and neocolonialism have harmed Africans deeply. Historical injustices have left lasting scars on their communities. Reparations are not just about money; they acknowledge profound damage done to people.
The President stressed confronting uncomfortable truths from the past. He called for comprehensive measures, including official apologies from responsible nations and institutions. Addressing crippling debt is crucial for economic growth in many African countries.
He highlighted the importance of providing resources to empower African nations. This will help them achieve sustainable development and engage in the global economy fully. Returning stolen artifacts is also vital for cultural heritage.
Mahama urged collaboration among African leaders, civil society organizations, youth groups, and diaspora members. He called for unity in building a future where justice prevails and past wounds heal.
“Let Africa Day 2025 be a turning point,” he said. He encouraged a commitment to prosperity and equality across the continent. The pursuit of reparations should reflect resilience and hope for a brighter future.
“Happy Africa Day! Let us unite towards a just future for all Africans,” he concluded.
