Mahama's lean gov't contributes to balance revenue and expenditure –Prof Gatsi

Prof. John Gatsi is the Dean of the Business School at UCC. He supports repealing the E-Levy. He believes savings from President John Mahama's government will cover any revenue loss.

His comments follow a KPMG survey. The survey estimates Ghana could lose about GH¢6.4 billion if the COVID-19 levy and E-Levy are removed in 2025.

Prof. Gatsi highlighted that reducing ministries from 30 to 23 cuts costs significantly. He stated, "Nobody can tell me that reducing ministries is not a cost-saving measure." He expressed concern for anyone who disagrees with this view.

He also mentioned that streamlining appointments at the Presidency would lower expenses. This contrasts with the previous administration, which he called "elephant-sized" in terms of appointees.

Prof. Gatsi argued that removing some taxes does not mean losing revenue. Instead, it can improve tax compliance and ease burdens on businesses and citizens.

His remarks came after Parliament approved repealing the E-Levy on Wednesday, pending presidential approval. He shared his views during an interview on Kessben FM in Accra.
