President John Mahama has announced plans to regularize motorcycles and tricycles ('Okada') for commercial passenger transport.

In his State of the Nation Address (SONA), he acknowledged the convenience, affordability, and accessibility of motorcycles and tricycles, especially in areas where traditional transport is limited.

Despite current restrictions under the Road Traffic Regulations of 2012 (L.I. 2180), the government will amend the regulatory framework to allow their use for commercial transport.

Mahama also highlighted concerns about poor road infrastructure, noting that the proportion of roads in disrepair has increased from 46% in 2015 to 57% in 2021, particularly in urban areas.

With current road project commitments at GH¢105 billion, the government remains committed to addressing these challenges.

The “Big Push” Programme will be a key initiative to rehabilitate major roads and improve the country’s road network, which supports over 90% of transportation for goods and services.
