President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for a Cashew Development Board. This board will be established alongside a new cashew processing factory in the Bono Region. These initiatives aim to boost Ghana’s agricultural industrialization and improve rural livelihoods.
During his Thank You tour on May 30, 2025, President Mahama highlighted the importance of cashew farming. He stated, “Cashew is not just a crop; it’s a livelihood for many.” He noted that it helps families with food and school fees. However, he pointed out that the sector lacks a structured policy framework.
The proposed Cashew Development Board will regulate and develop the industry. It will handle pricing, market access, quality standards, processing, and research. “This board will oversee pricing and regulation to support our farmers,” President Mahama said.
Additionally, the President announced a partnership with the private sector for a processing factory. “By processing our cashew locally, we can create jobs and retain wealth,” he explained. This initiative is part of a broader agenda to industrialize agriculture.
Ghana is one of Africa’s top cashew producers, with Bono Region at its center. However, limited processing capacity has left farmers vulnerable to price changes. The announcement has been welcomed by agricultural stakeholders as a step toward empowering farmers and attracting investment.
