Majority Leader proposes pension fund for MPS

Mahama Ayariga Proposes Pension Fund for MPs

Mahama Ayariga, the majority leader of parliament, made a significant statement. He proposed creating a pension fund for members of parliament (MPs).

This retirement package would help MPs financially after they leave office. It would support those who lose their seats or retire voluntarily. Current MPs could also benefit from this retirement plan.

Ayariga suggested forming a committee to design the pension scheme. This committee would study best practices from other countries, like Kenya. He mentioned using carbon credit revenues to fund the scheme, promoting a green economy.

Some MPs expressed concern about former colleagues struggling financially after leaving parliament. They noted that some become beggars and cannot afford medications.

The proposal received full support from the MPs. They agreed it would address their welfare issues. However, there were disagreements on funding sources.

Some MPs wanted government support while others opposed burdening taxpayers. A committee will be established to explore these funding issues further.

In another matter, MPs called for improvements in pre-emergency care and pre-hospital systems. They aimed to reduce morbidity and mortality rates in the country.

They discussed the need for better first aid skills and quick responses to health emergencies. Simple medical interventions can prevent deaths during emergencies.

Additionally, MPs highlighted the importance of supporting people living with leprosy and disabilities in general.
