Dr. Steve Manteaw, a civil society activist, opposes privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), citing a lack of successful examples in Ghana's public sector.
He advocates for insulating ECG from political interference, similar to reforms with GCB and Goil, as a path to improvement.
His comments come as Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor inaugurated a seven-member committee to explore private-sector involvement in ECG. The initiative aims to address inefficiencies, financial losses, and debt that hinder ECG's service delivery.
The Minister emphasized the potential of private-sector participation to provide resources and expertise to improve ECG's operations while ensuring a non-partisan, transparent process.
The committee's framework will involve public input, aiming to set standards through competitive tendering to revitalize ECG and enhance electricity supply.
