Child labour is a major challenge in Ghana, according to the Minister. He noted that poverty is a root cause. However, Ghana has laws and programs to address this issue.
This year's global theme is “Progress is clear, but there is more to do. Let’s speed up.” Dr. Pelpuo highlighted key actions needed. These include implementing national action plans and strengthening legal enforcement. He also mentioned increasing inspections and improving access to quality education.
Dr. Pelpuo pointed out important social protection initiatives. These include the Cocoa Enhancement Programme and the Child-Education Support from the Ghana Cocoa Board. Other initiatives are the Ghana School Feeding Programme and the LEAP programme. All aim to break the poverty cycle that leads to child labour.
To eliminate child labour by 2030, partnerships are essential. The Minister emphasized collaboration with international bodies like ILO and UNICEF. He also called for cooperation with traditional leaders, civil society, parents, businesses, and local communities.
The Minister announced plans for nationwide campaigns using various platforms. These will raise awareness about the harmful effects of child labour. He praised the resilience of affected children and families. Dr. Pelpuo urged all stakeholders to take bold action together.
“Together, we can build a Ghana where no child is forced to work,” he said. “Children should only learn, grow, and dream.”
