The government has announced that the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) is expected to generate approximately GH¢9.9 billion in 2025 to help bridge the funding shortfall caused by the suspension of the USAID programme.

A statement from the Presidency highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s concerns over the estimated $156 million deficit from the USAID suspension, warning of its impact on critical health and social intervention programmes.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, responding to inquiries in Parliament on March 18, assured that the 2025 budget has accounted for these concerns.

"The National Health Insurance Authority will receive a total of GH¢9.9 billion for the year 2025, thanks to the uncapping," he stated. "This adjustment has provided extra resources amounting to GH¢4.2 billion for the National Health Insurance Authority, allowing it to prioritize addressing the funding gap created by the USAID suspension."
