NPA boss appeals to Ghanaians to accept GHC 1 Fuel Levy: “It’s painful but necessary”

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has asked Ghanaians for patience. This request follows the introduction of a new GHC 1 per litre fuel levy.

Mr. Tameklo called the decision difficult but necessary. He acknowledged the economic hardship many citizens face. He emphasized that the levy was introduced out of necessity.

“We are pleading with Ghanaians,” he stated on Facebook. “This is painful, but it is necessary. Please bear with us.”

He explained that the levy is crucial for maintaining a stable fuel supply chain. It will support national fuel reserves and ensure long-term sustainability in Ghana’s petroleum sector.

Mr. Tameklo assured the public that the government understands this burden on households and businesses. He stressed that this decision was not made lightly.

This move aims to stabilize the sector and prevent disruptions in fuel availability. To build public trust, Mr. Tameklo promised transparent management of the revenue generated from the levy.

He also mentioned that there would be regular updates on how funds are used. Government sources confirmed that this levy is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on external fuel sources.

The goal is to strengthen Ghana’s energy security in the long term.
