The Ghana Online Drivers Union has threatened to hold a public demonstration. They will act if platform operators and key stakeholders do not engage them in dialogue.
This threat follows the union's rejection of a directive from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). The GPRTU proposed a 15% reduction in transport fares. The union refuses to comply, citing unresolved issues.
These issues include high booking fees, lack of regulation, and no formal recognition. Francis Tengey, President of the Ghana Online Drivers Union, spoke to Joy Business. He said drivers have been ignored for too long and are ready to take action.
Tengey warned that if platform operators proceed with unilateral actions, they will demonstrate. The union is also urging the Minister for Transport to introduce regulations for online ride-hailing.
They believe current oversight is lacking and harms drivers. “The time has come for real regulation,” Mr. Tengey stated. He called on the Minister to recognize the union and implement fair policies.
The union’s position reflects rising tensions in the ride-hailing industry. Drivers face increasing operational costs, platform fees, and limited representation in decisions affecting them.
